Since your refrigerator can be one of the most expensive appliances in your home, we thought we would help you make sure you keep yours running smoothly for years!
1) Vacuum the Coils: Once a year, remember to vacuum the coils located either behind or underneath your refrigerator. These collect dirt and grime which then makes your refrigerator work harder and use up more energy. Cleaning them will cut back on this extra use.
2) Check your Seals: The seals around the doors keep the cool air in. If they are cracked or coming loose, the cool air will escape and more energy will be used to keep the fridge cold. Clean the seals with warm soapy water, and if they are brittle or cracked, call the repair company to come fix them.
3) Check the Drip Pan: Underneath the refrigerator you will find a drip pan. Here, water and food particles collect. Keep it empty by remembering to empty it every 3-4 months.
4) Defrost your Refrigerator: Whenever the ice in your freezer builds up more than 1/4 of an inch, you will need to defrost it if your refrigerator does not have automatic defrost. To do so, remove all of the cold items and store them with ice packs while you turn the refrigerator off, causing it to defrost.
5) Clean the Water Filter: If you have a refrigerator that includes a built in water filter for ice and water dispenser, remember to clean out the filter often. Change the filter every 6 months in order to keep your water fresh and pure. Remember: water that is running through a dirty filter will become even dirtier than it was in the first place!
6) Level the Refrigerator: If your fridge is not properly leveled, it may not close properly, which will use up more energy as air can escape. Use a leveler to make sure it is even, and if not adjust the feet underneath to level it.
