Change the Way You Water

Summertime is filled with outdoor activities that revolve around water. From watering the lawn, to laying by the pool, to running through the sprinklers, water use can really add up. You can cut back on the amount of water your family uses, without sacrificing any of the fun!

“In the U.S., the average person uses between 100 to 175 gallons of water daily,” says Caroline Howell, founder of GreenBeanie, a green home and lifestyle consultant. “To put this in perspective, the average person in Africa uses a mere 5 gallons a day.” Clearly, people aren’t doing all they can to conserve water, a limited resource that — if used improperly — can result in sky-high summer bills.

1) Water in the Morning:

Make sure to water your lawn and garden in the morning, rather than mid to late afternoon when a good portion of the water evaporates due to the heat and humidity. In the morning, water has more time to reach the roots properly, saving you from wasting water.

2) Water the Lawn Smartly:

Get the most out of your watering products, because inefficiency leads to huge amounts of waste. Try using a noodle sprinkler, which is more accurate to water your garden and lawn with the best aim. Also, if you have an automatic sprinkler, make sure to turn it off when you know rain is on the way-saving more water and money.

3) Playtime Conservation:

While the kids are running through the sprinklers, try to opt for a low-flow one which will greatly decrease water use. Try to limit the sprinkler use by offering them water guns, which will increase their activity and lower water use drastically.
